A Northgate Training Game
The ProcessA simple training exercise riddled with unexpected problems that bring key lessons about communication out into the open.
Always a popular and effective exercise where two teams are given instructions to undertake a task that involves detailed route planning. Both teams have similar aims but slightly different instructions.
Successful completion of the task involves co-operation between the teams!
The teams are kept in isolation with their only means of communication being emails which they send to each other via the computer.
After the first half hour teams may also meet but only one person from each team can talk at these meetings. The rest of the team can attend but not speak (which some team members find difficult to do!) Hilarious misconceptions abound, as do lots of false assumptions and problems caused by teams refusing to GIVE information but anxious to TAKE what they can.
This business game brings out key lessons, which at the debrief often relate to real examples from the workplace. We can all improve our communication skills and this dynamic exercise illustrates just how much confusion is created and time lost by the way we fail to communicate effectively.
On completing this business training activty participants will:
“This was fun and action packed! It helped to increase the understanding of the differing needs and objectives within the company and departments. Even though we are working for one goal.”C. Murphy - Valpak
“I thought Communication is the Key was very good. I liked the hustle and bustle of it. Energetic and problematic.”
“Some 96 managers in eight different groups, set to at the start of our management conference, grappling with the exercise, Communication is the Key. Without exception, they all enjoyed the session and learned a great deal about themselves, team building and communication.”

“The general feedback on our conference was ‘one of the best yet!’ I think that using starting the day with the Crime Squad really helped relax people into the day and I think they all found the Hotel exercise both challenging and rewarding and having you run the afternoon enabled us to see how the delegates actually worked together. Thanks to you and your team for helping make our conference a success.
The challenge for us is now to come up with something different for next year so any suggestions would be appreciated.”C. Garrett – Selwood
