Uncover resources and capabilities in staff they had forgotten or never realised they had.

This activity is presented by writer, biographer and broadcaster Amanda Thomas, and Terry James, BBC and ITV editor and screenwriter. It helps people uncover resources and capabilities in staff that they had forgotten or never realised that they had in order that they can become more multi faceted within their job role.

It is enjoyable and controllable (biographers only have to reveal what they want to) exercise that will produce a more multi dimensional employee. In this difficult financial climate, this is the perfect way of identifying what roles employees’ fit best into and to utilise their talents and gifts, to give them and their company the best advantage in the marketplace. Instead of having to cajole staff to undertake duties, this team event will have them volunteering their services and the advantage to your company as a whole is potentially limitless! This also represents an excellent way of honing prioritising skills, presentation skills and in boosting confidence, especially in customer facing staff.

This activity begins with the group thinking back to their childhood and recording the highlights as a short chapter that they will then share with the group.

From this, others are invited to identify strengths and early promise that the biographer demonstrated and to question and comment on what the biographer has done since, with their early interests.  The group are then invited to bring their story up to date with the skills and achievements that they have to date.

TV Editing Team Event Photo

BBC and ITV editor and screenwriter Terry James, videos the presentations and shows the participants how well they have performed.

During the process, the group are encouraged to remember the promise and the talents that they had as a child and young adult and identify which of those have carried through to their current employment and job role.   They are also asked to identify what skills they had (still have) that they could be applying to the role within their company.

The biography is now taken back to the childhood chapter and having heard what their colleagues have said about their early promise and having reviewed the early talents and gifts that they showed each biographer invents an outcome that those early talents and gifts might have led to, that is different to or even similar to their current situation and role within their company.

The group are then invited to invent different endings for each other’s life stories.

Duration: 1 day

Benefits to the employer of staff who attend this event:

  • Staff discover or reacquaint themselves with forgotten talents and think about adapting these to their current job role
  • The piece to camera honing and development of prioritising skills
  • Presenting a précis of someone else life inspires group and individual
  • Being filmed and having to be concise builds presentation skills
  • Questioning colleagues on their ‘biography’ builds interview and information gathering skills
  • In the ’imaginary’ outcome scenario new possibilities may become apparent and staff will be encouraged to think about what they could add to their role to make them more multi faceted
  • Team building is achieved by opening up to colleagues about long forgotten childhood ambitions
  • An objective view of themselves and their talents and capabilities is facilitated by others perceptions of their talents
  • Optional feedback on staff performance and potential during the team event.
“What a refreshing look at resource and development! I really got into this, after all I knew I had a book in me, I just didn’t realise it was my own story! I loved doing the filming, and found I was quite a natural! I thoroughly enjoyed Amanda’s day and took a lot away from it to use in my private and professional life!”R T Marlborough
“I loved the day and found this way of looking at my talents and how I used (or under used them). I was quite nervous about the filming but did enjoy it! I have taken on some ancillary roles at work now that I feel confident in doing, having reacquainted myself with skills I had forgotten I had!”S C Hungerford
“I think this has added a lot to my confidence in the workplace and in my personal development, I was sceptical but Amanda knows what she is talking about and Terry coached me through the TV bit!  This was a fascinating daily course. Well worth doing.”F H Melksham
