Parents use games for training their child the essential early development skills. Children soon learn from playing games and learning through fun, so why stop?

Our experience in over 30 years of training have shown that if you want to teach information, then telling the person works reasonably well. Showing what is to be learned works well too. But a combination of telling and demonstration works better for information transfer. If practice is added, it reinforces the learning.

A Chinese proverb clearly illustrates this:

Our experience of using games for training is similar to The Learning Pyramid – from research conducted by the National Training Laboratory in Bethel, Maine.

This charts the average retention rates for various teaching methods. According to the chart, the lowest rates of retention are found in the "lecture" method, at the top of the pyramid, which generates an average retention rate of just 5%. On the opposite end of the scale, the "practice by doing" method achieves an average retention rate of 75% and "immediate use" achieves 90%.

When people are gathered together for training, they are often meeting face-to-face for the first time.
